She might have missed Veganuary this year, but a coalition of plant-based women leaders from across the globe are calling for US Vice-President Kamala Harris to go vegan for 30 days under the banner #plantpoweredkamala

The JIVINITI group which includes VBites entrepreneur Heather Mills, UK charity Viva and Million Dollar Vegan advocate Genesis Butler, have created a petition asking the newly elected US VP to adopt a “whole food plant-based diet for 31 days and experience the benefits of this healthy and compassionate approach to nutrition.”

They argue that the move towards plant-based diets takes “concrete steps in resolving the COVID-19 pandemic in the near term, preventing a future pandemic, and addressing the shadow pandemics of hunger, chronic illness, systemic inequities and climate change suffered by millions in the United States over the longer term.”

Heather Mills of VBites stated:  “An animal-based economy oppresses everyone. I pledge my support to the JIVINITI women’s coalition and invite Vice President Harris to support plant-forward policy change and to go vegan.”

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams who is also supporting the move said shifting to plant-based nutritional guidance to start solving the public health crisis is essential.

“I wholeheartedly support the JIVINITI coalition in initiating these vital conversations focused on women of color in the US and for marginalized women worldwide,” says Adams. “We must turn food deserts into food oases, particularly in communities of color where nutritional foods are scarce. Switching to a whole-food, plant-based diet taught me about the transformative power of what’s on our dinner plate. With the new Biden-Harris Administration in office, it’s time we take this conversation national,” said Adams.

There are already a few high profile vegan voices in politics on both slides or the Atlantic. US senator Cory Booker who ran for the US Democratic Presidential nomination is a committed vegan, while in the UK Labour boasts a small group of vegans including Bristol eats MP Kerry McCarthy. As we reported recently there is also now a caucus of Vegan Conservatives.
