The Mini goes vegan – no more leather in new models

One of the most iconic British car brands is going vegan. Mini, which these days is owned by BMW, has announced that it is going to cease offering leather interiors in all new models.

It has replaced the leather with recycled fabric, and an underlining that’s 70 percent recycled.

It isn’t the first car company to go leather-free. BMW’s 5-Series cars will all sport vegan leather for next year, while  Ford, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Tesla and Renault are among those who have been experimenting with non-animal based leather.

“We don’t need leather any more in the future, because we don’t believe it’s sustainable,” Mini design boss Oliver Heilmer told Autocar. “We’re totally convinced that we will have modern and high-value products without leather.”

Mini will also be increasing the proportion of electric vehicles that it manufactures.

PETA published a list of leather-free car models in October last year
